Are condoms allowed in Islam what is the condom fatwa

<< Back to Articles Section

A common question is asked is whether the use of male condoms are allowed in Islam. Overall according to most Islamic school of thoughts (like Hanfi, Malaki, Hambili, Shafi) condoms are permissible under Sharia or Islamic law however the intention needs to be corrected. Having the intention of preventing birth or pregnancy or limiting the ummah growth is not allowed.

Condoms play an important role in healthy sexual relationship and preventing any infection. While the awareness of sexually transmitted diseases has increased considerably over the last many years the use of contraceptives have limited its spread. With this in mind the ulema have allowed its use. But please be aware that any kind of oral or anal sexual intercourse using condoms is not allowed under Islamic law.

Islam does allow for when it comes to withdrawal before ejaculation of a man if a person does not want a child but that is subject only if the wife allows her permission for that, because it her right to full satisfaction and also to have a child.

The popular narration which is quoted is from Jaabir ibn Abd-Allaah (R.A.N) who mentioned that: We used to practice in coitus interrupts at the time of the Prophet of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him). News of that reached the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him), and he did not forbid us to do that. Narrated by al-Bukhaari (250) and Muslim (160)
